Meriel Patricia Tufnell (1948-2002)

The first female jockey to win a race under Jockey Club rules when she triumphed at Kempton Park in 1972, Meriel went on to become Britain’s first woman champion jockey. Her first win was all the more remarkable as Meriel had never raced before, having competed only in showjumping. Born with dislocated hips and chronic asthma, Meriel was the first British woman to become European champion, she went on to found the very first female jockey’s association in the world with a meeting in the ladies’ changing room at Haydock Park.
